An intruder who broke into a Lincoln County woman's home was killed early Friday when the woman armed herself and shot him.
Donna Jackson, 57, was asleep when she heard Billy Dean Riley pounding on her back door about 12:45 a.m., Sheriff Chuck Mangion said.

While on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, Jackson went to investigate and Riley tossed a patio table through the glass door before coming inside. She fired one blast from a 16-gauge shotgun, hitting him in the chest, Mangion said.

Deputies arrived at the rural home in the 352100 block of East 800 Road south of Cushing and found Riley, 53, of Sparks lying dead.

Mangion said he smelled of alcohol and had a lengthy history of drug and alcohol offenses.

Riley and his sister, who authorities said was also heavily intoxicated, had been driving east of the woman's house when Riley crashed his pickup truck. It wasn't immediately clear why he went to Jackson's home.

Mangion said the woman was not arrested and appears to have acted in self-defense. She was alone when Riley came to the house.

Jackson was shaken up, but unhurt, Mangion said.

A would-be armed robber apparently had second thoughts when an employee pulled out his shotgun Monday night.

It happened at the Salem & Sons Convenience Store on Sunset Avenue in Rocky Mount around 10:20 p.m.

Police say employees were inside cleaning up, and saw a customer at the front door. They let the man inside, but at the same time another man came in as well and showed a black handgun in the direction of an employee. That employee immediately got his shotgun, racked the slide, and pointed it at the would-be robber.

The robber then turned around and slowly left the store. Nothing was taken in the robbery attempt.

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP — Don Kaighn doesn't want to be portrayed as a hero or a vigilante.

"I was just protecting myself," said the 84-year-old, standing next to a dresser mirror that was shattered during what appeared to have been an all-out gunfight in the bedroom of his Franklin Avenue home.

A bullet also pierced a rifle case next to Kaighn's bed during a violent home invasion Monday night. All around the bedroom and out into the hallway, investigators left behind numbered stickers indicating where bullet holes were found.

Kaighn, a World War II veteran and a longtime member of the National Rifle Association, said he was bruised and had pulled a muscle, but was not seriously injured.

"I got a little too much exercise trying to chase her out of the house," the octogenarian said, maintaining a sense of humor after his difficult ordeal.

SEATTLE -- King County prosecutors say they won't charge a woman who shot a man after a confrontation on a Metro bus in Seattle.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that 31-year-old Sara Brereton acted in self defense when she wounded 26-year-old Emmanuel Salters at a downtown bus stop.

Investigators say Brereton had reason to fear Salters was about to injure her on April 25 as he angrily advanced toward her.

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A Miami catering company turned into a crime scene Monday morning after police and paramedics rushed to help a man who had been shot.

The man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to Miami Fire Spokesman Ignatius Carroll.

The shooting occurred sometime after 9 a.m. inside Yolene Catering on the 5900 block of Northwest Second Avenue. Yolene Francois, the owner, told CBS4's Tiffani Helberg that her husband shot a man in self defense. She said the man had worked for them briefly. He allegedly came in demanding money and picked up a chair as if to strike him. That's when the owner allegedly shot the man, Francois said.

Miami-Dade police say the owner who shot the former employee won't face charges because he shot in self defense. The former employee who allegedly assaulted the husband may face charges.

Detectives from the New Hampshire State Police major crimes unit were still on scene at 616 Third Avenue in Berlin 18 hours after a fatal shooting.

Residents say it's a normally quiet neighborhood, but Wednesday night police say three men forced their way into an apartment and attacked a man and woman inside. At least two of the robbers had handguns and were allegedly threatening the couple. At some point the male resident got hold of his own handgun and got into a scuffle with the intruders. Shots were fired and one of the robbers, Nathan Stringfield, 23, of Berlin, was hit and died at the scene.

Next-door neighbor Joe Gauthier was doing his dishes when the gunfight broke out.

"I'd just shut the water off and I heard a gunshot so I ran to the side window which faces that building and looked out and saw a man on the ground there," Gauthier said. "He was just lying there and the girl was screaming."

Officials say the woman was the girlfriend of the man who lives in the apartment. She was inside when the armed intruders forced their way in.

"Once they went inside they assaulted the resident inside the apartment. The male resident managed to get his own firearm and that's when the struggle and gunfight ensued," N.H. Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin said.

The second intruder made it down the street and ran a few blocks on Western Avenue before going into a building. That's where police found him suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. He's hospitalized in critical condition.

The third intruder managed to get away-- police are still searching for him.

SORRENTO -- Investigators say a homeowner shot and killed a suspected burglar on his property early Thursday morning.

It happened at a house on the 25000 block of Springhill Avenue.

Investigators said Beil's wife called 911 and he went outside armed with a handgun.

Ron Schroeder, one of Beil's neighbors, said he heard three shots fired and ran over to help.

"He felt he was threatened," Schroeder said. "Didn't know how many other people were around and he was defending himself. He was scared for his life is the impression I got. I don't think he was out there shooting to protect his lawn equipment."

Gun-Toting Homeowner Catches Burglar In Boxers

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/21638469/detail.html

GOLDEN, Colo. -- A Colorado homeowner did a double take when he caught a burglar at gunpoint in his house.

The intruder, who had more than made himself at home, was only wearing a pair of boxers -- which belonged to the homeowner, KMGH-TV reported. The man had also showered, done his laundry and placed his own items in the refrigerator, Golden police said.

David Strickland told KMGH-TV that he returned home at 5 p.m. last Monday to find a stranger's white Lexus ES300 in his garage. Inside, there were signs that someone had been rummaging through his house.

"What was going through my mind is 'I cannot believe what's going on here,'" said Strickland.

As he searched the house, the homeowner called out, demanding to know who was there.

"To his surprise, a male voice answered," a Golden police report said.

He looked upstairs and saw a man calmly standing there wearing only a pair of boxers.

When Strickland demanded that the burglar get off his property, he said, the man claimed he was the real homeowner and that Strickland's gun was a toy.

Strickland said that he fired a warning shot at the door when the suspect moved toward him aggressively.

Police soon arrived at the home in the 1200 block of Mesa Court and arrested 24-year old Timothy P. Gonzales of Golden.
